Herrmann's Royal Lipizzan Stallions, Myakka City, FL

The Original Lipizzaner Stallions of Austria have always held a special fascination for me. So when I discovered there is a place in Myakka City where they winter, I became rather excited at the possibility of seeing them in person. Going to a show is amazing, and something one should not miss if given the opportunity to attend. But to walk among the stalls and touch the horses themselves is another thing altogether.

I wanted to be impressed with the facility where they live. Truth is, I'm not sure what it was I was expecting, but I assure you it wasn't this. Don't get me wrong, there was nothing wrong with the place. It was just much different than how I thought the "Royal Lipiazzan Stallions" would be kept, and felt a bit like I was driving through someone's yard to park. What I found was your typical horse stables and grazing areas that just happen to have a performance arena with small stands for visitors next to it.

The staff was friendly and appeared happy to answer any questions I had during my walk through the barn. And at the time of my visit, the horses were all in their stalls, munching on fresh hay and other treats and paid little attention to me. To be honest, I wouldn't want to have to acknowledge visitors during my lunch break either. On a side, did you know most Lipizzan horses are grey instead of white?

I'm sure if my visit had been timed better and I was able to watch these beautiful creatures perform, I would have been a bit more excited about the place. But as it stands, I was simply underwhelmed. I don't believe I will go so far as to recommend staying away because if a person is very into horses and the like, I'm sure it would be worth the visit... especially if they get to see a show. The shows, incidentally, are only $5. Additionally, if you do plan a visit, be sure to have plenty of gas in your car, as this location is rather out of the way.

  1. I just saw the Bourne Massachusetts show this week and I loved it.
The jumps werent as spectacular as I expected, there werent enough horses to be seen performing in synch. There were only 5 horses at the most out
at one time. Double that would have been a better effect and apprecication for their performance.
The riders were very good and friendly.
I was able to tour the stalls and pet all of them,
It revived my interest in the Lipizzaner story, Miracle of the White
    Stallions too.
I would recommend show and I will see them again someday.
